The Story It Told
Few adventure premises are as sturdy as Alexandre Dumas's wronged man who claws his way back from ruin and takes justice into his own hands. The radio adaptation leaned into that strength fully. Edmond Dantes — falsely imprisoned on a charge of treason in the early post-Napoleonic era, locked away in one of France's most notorious prisons — eventually escapes, reinvents himself as the Count of Monte Cristo, and sets about settling scores with the people who destroyed his life. Week after week, from his island stronghold, he directed reprisals against his enemies, one by one. It's a formula that doesn't wear out easily, and Dantes himself carries real weight as one of literature's great crusaders for justice. The mystery, the disguises, the scheming — all of it plays beautifully in sound.
From the West Coast to the Mutual Network
The series started on the Don Lee Network in 1944–45, airing Tuesday nights and reaching only the West Coast, sponsored by Peralto Wines. A Billboard notice from July 15, 1944 — "Mont Cristo and Think Hard Newest Don Lee Programs" — announced its arrival. Carleton Young played Edmond Dantes in that initial run as the "enigmatic and swashbuckling" Count, with Anne Stone as Marie Duchene, the Count's friend and conspirator, and Ferdinand Munier as Rene Michon, the faithful manservant. Joseph Kearns, Barbara Lee, Vic Rodman, and Paul Marion filled out the supporting cast. Thomas Freebaim-Smith directed; Rod O'Connor announced.
When the series moved to Mutual on December 19, 1946, it gained a national audience. That first Mutual run aired Thursdays at 8:30 through June 26, 1947, then came back in summers only during 1947–48, then returned more durably from June 12, 1949 — Sundays at 9 through mid-September, then various timeslots — until January 1, 1952.
The Cast That Did the Work
Carleton Young carried Dantes from the Don Lee run straight into the Mutual years. Before this role, Young had held the title part on The Adventures of Ellery Queen from 1942 to 1943, and he would go on to lead The Whisperer on NBC in 1951 and turn up in Hollywood pictures opposite Sinatra, Mitchum, and Jane Wyman. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Radio section, dedicated in February 1960.
The supporting cast around him on Mutual was something else again. Parley Baer took over Rene. William Conrad, Jay Novello, Virginia Gregg, Howard McNear, and John Dehner filled out the ensemble, with Jaime del Valle directing. What's striking in retrospect is that this is essentially the same repertory company that would populate the radio Gunsmoke beginning in 1952 — Conrad as Matt Dillon, Baer as Chester, McNear as Doc Adams. Monte Cristo was, among other things, a working laboratory for the voices that would soon define one of radio's great westerns.
Only a handful of episodes are known to survive — a reminder that even shows with this much talent in the booth could vanish almost entirely from the record.
